What Is A Parent Coordinator?

In New Jersey, a parent coordinator is an impartial person who works with families to resolve conflicts without having to go to court. The State of New Jersey has a Parent Coordinator Program with clearly defined rules and guidelines for parent coordinators.

According to the New Jersey Parent Coordinator program, a parent coordinator “is a neutral person appointed by the court to facilitate the timely resolution of day-to-day parenting issues that arise within the context of family life when the parties cannot resolve issues on their own.”

What Role Does Parental Coordination Services Play In Family Law Cases?

As briefly explained above, a Parent Coordinator serves as a neutral third party who works with families to resolve day-to-day conflicts that often arise between families, especially parents who are divorced or share custody of their children.

For example, one parent might want to change their current court-ordered parent visitation schedule, and the other parent might refuse to do so. By using a parent coordinator, parents may be able to resolve this issue without having to go to court, which can often take much longer and cost a lot more money.

Who Chooses A Parent Coordinator In New Jersey?

If there’s a dispute between family members that requires the use of a parent coordinator, both family members involved in the dispute select the neutral parent coordinator together. A judge in the New Jersey Superior Court Family Division court that has jurisdiction over the legal matter then appoints the parent coordinator chosen by family members, according to New Jersey Court Rule 5:8D.
